On the edge, in Waterton Lakes National Park

On Friday (July 11th), my wife (Monica) and I hiked to the northern edge of Waterton Lakes NP and, still hiking, returned along Lakeview Ridge, which forms the northeastern edge of the park. The 22 km hike, most of it off-trail, follows a serpentine ridge line and includes three rather daunting ascents of mountain summits, each separated by long, steep descents. The net result: a lot of elevation gain … and loss. We didn't see another person, and that's par for the course.

The first of the attached images shows Monica as she, late in the day on the last leg of the hike, looks south over the Waterton River valley. Chief Mountain, Montana, appears to the extreme left. Upper Waterton Lake, visible to the near right, also showcases the mountains of northern Glacier NP (Montana).

The second image shows a small herd of buffalo seen within the same viewscape. Not visible, but present in close proximity to the buffalo, is a coyote den. At its entrance we saw four rather leggy pups and their glowering, ever-watchful mother.
